What is League of Legends, and how does it work?

League of Legends or LoL, is a video game developed and published in 2009 by Riot Games. Almost everyone knows about League of Legends these days. It has a competitive team-based game mode that emphasises tactics and outplaying components. LoL is available for macOS and Microsoft Windows. League of Legends is a complicated and challenging game that requires high-level strategy with fast-paced action. League of Legends is commonly referred to as a MOBA (Multiplayer online battle arena), but it contains a variety of genre aspects.

Champions

In League of Legends, there are nearly 150 characters, referred to as champions. You can select any champion and each champion has its own set of skills and abilities. In general, you can play each Champion wherever you choose, but there are some criteria to follow.

Goal

The game’s main objective is actually quite simple. The players work together as a team to break the opponent’s ‘Nexus’, (which is the core of the enemy team’s base) before it is broken by the enemy team. So, you basically attempt to invade the enemy’s base, and in the end, seize or destroy something.

How to Play

Each team has five players respectively. The players control the ‘champion’, a character with special skills and different playing styles. Champions gain power during a match by accumulating experience points, purchasing things, and earning gold in order to defeat the enemy side. A champion must level up in order to fight and keep up with the opposition team. Kills provide experience, which is used to level up. Both teams place their players in different parts of the Summoner's Rift, the most popular map in League of Legends, to face off against an opponent and gain dominance. Players execute a variety of objectives as the game continues, and the gold earned from these objectives is used by players to strengthen their champion and boost their team’s dominance over the game. The team which is able to take advantage of these benefits to move into the opponent team’s base and break the Nexus wins.

Other Game Modes

League of Legends offers two extra permanent game modes in addition to Summoner’s Rift. ARAM (All Random, All Mild) is a five-versus-five mode similar to Summoner’s Rift, but it takes place on the Howling Abyss map, which has just one long lane, no jungle area, and champions assigned to players at random, Due to the map’s limited size, players must be cautious when evading enemy abilities. The auto battler Teamfight Tactics is a permanent game mode in which players form a team and compete to be the last one standing, like in previous games in the genre. Teamfight Tactics is available for Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows. The Windows and macOS clients support cross-platform play.

Events

The Riot Games League of Legends World Championship is an annual professional tournament. Since 2015, the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) has been a yearly League of Legends tournament. It is, after the World Championship, the second-most important tournament of the year.
